It's time to get shreddy on the new hillside trails!!! Keep in mind, these trails are unlike anything Anchorage has seen, so ride smart and be careful. The New Hillside Trails are Open!!! Thank you to all of our volunteers and sponsors for making this project a reality. This project started as an STA vision almost 3 years ago and now it is finally done!

These trails are more difficult than others at Hillside and Kincaid, so please RIDE SMART: Pre-Ride, Re-Ride, Free-Ride.

For safety, hiking on the one-way downhill trails is not recommended. Hiking is okay on all other trails.

Want to know about the new trails? Check them out below, in order of easiest to most difficult.

Ticket to Ride – You have to pay to play and this blue flow uptrack is your ticket to the show. Designed as a climbing only trail, this directional uphill trail will connect the major intersections so you can do laps all day long. But remember! This trail is UPHILL ONLY in the summer – for everyone’s safety, please respect the rules and save your shred for the new directional downhills! However, once the snow files this trail becomes 2-way traffic for all you winter bikers.

Jeff’s Whoop Whoop – Now the longest trail in the new trail network, this Intermediate Blue level flow trail will leave you hooting and hollering. This top-to-bottom one way downhill is filled with flowy berms, fast rollers, and a variety of jumps. Designed to be progressive, this trail can be rolled by beginners, challenge the intermediate rider, and entertain experts with playful and creative line choices. Link together tables, hips, step ups, and rollers to boost your riding to the next level! This trail was named in memory of Jeff Scott, avid mountain biker and president of the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage. Jeff bridged a relationship between the ski community and the biking community. He helped both groups understand how a world class system of ski trails and mountain biking trails could co-exist. Through his work with NC Machinery, Jeff donated the use of equipment on several STA projects. Were it not for Jeff’s generosity, positive thinking, and grace for bringing people together, we might not have the singletrack trails that we have today. He loved to yell out “Whoop Whoop!” while biking the trails.

Gauer Power – Looking for a mix of flowy berms, rhythm jumps, step downs, and rock gardens? This mixed terrain black diamond is the natural progression step between Jeff’s Whoop Whoop and Eh-Line and Dig Deep. Hone your skills by pumping and jumping your way through this mid paced flow trail. The trail is named after Project Lead Cody Gauer for his great work on the project. Cody, STA President Lee Bolling and STA Board Members first started crafting the vision for Hillside Phase 2 in the Spring of 2016. Seeing the potential hidden in the terrain, Cody and Lee embarked on two and a half years of planning, design, community engagement, and public process to bring this network to life. The finished product is the result of many design iterations and the dedicated work of Gravity Logic, Happy Trails, and the STA Board to make these trails a reality.

Eh-Line – This black diamond flow trail gets bigger as you go. Starting with the airable rock roll at the top to the sendable bridge at Goal Posts and continuing down to the technical finishing section at the bottom – Eh-Line naturally pulls you through a progressively larger rhythm of tables and doubles. Trust the flow! No need to pedal or brake if you find the right rhythm and trust the trail. Not only is this a nod to the venerable Whistler headline trail A-Line, but to the two Canadians on this project – Gravity Logic’s Design Consultant Tom Prochazka (Tom Pro) and STA Project Lead Cody Gauer. Tom Pro is Gravity Logic’s Godfather of trail construction and responsible for world famous runs like A-Line, Dirt Merchant, and Crank it Up. A master of design and with a natural eye for flow, Tom’s design elements can be felt throughout the new trail network.

Dig Deep – Rocks, Roots, Jumps, and Drops pepper this fast paced, challenging technical black diamond trail. With mandatory features throughout, this trail will test your speed, flow, and technical prowess. This techy test snakes along the hillside below Spencer’s loop and uniquely blends old school tech with new school flow. Dig Deep was named in recognition of the hundreds of volunteers that came out and poured countless hours into this 100% hand dug trail. Slashing through deep vegetation, excavating huge amounts of organics, and shaping the entire trail by hand, this trail represents the first hand dug mountain bike specific trail constructed in Anchorage in 10 years. Over 300 volunteers donated their time and strong backs to make this happen and the results are fantastic!
